Campus Channel Interview on the Master in Statistics for Smart Data

Everything you need to know about ENSAI’s Master in Statistics for Smart Data in one video. Campus Channel, a French higher education specialist media, interviewed the head of the program and an alumna. Topics include curriculum, admission process, or graduates’ career opportunities.

A no-filter interview with Valentin Patilea, head of the Master in Statistics for Smart Data and research director at ENSAI, and Catriona Mitchison, class of 2019, now an associate Data Scientist at Expedia Group.

60 seconds to introduce ENSAI’s Master in Statistics for Smart Data

The Campus Channel journalists traditionally gets down to the heart of the subject by asking one of the interviewees to introduce the program in one minute. Here is Valentin Patilea’s pitch about the Master in Statistics for Smart Data:

“Dear students, we are happy and proud to present you today our Master of Science program at ENSAI, a French top engineering school in Data Science.

Statistics for Smart Data is a one-year program entirely in English, leading to an official French Master Degree in Applied Mathematics. Lectures are given by leading academics and professionals in Data Science.

Project topics and internships are proposed by a large panel of French and foreign companies or research labs. Some of the Master’s graduates continue with a PhD in Applied Mathematics or Computer Science.

Artificial intelligence requires smart specialists who understand how black boxes work, who can design new methods and algorithms.

The up-to-date topics covered by the lectures starting from the fundamentals to the implementation of case studies will help you to become an “ENSAI Smartie”. You will then be ready to respond to the new challenges raised by the modern applications.

Become an “ENSAI Smartie” by joining our Master program!”

The life of a Smartie: an alumna tells it all

Catriona Mitchison shared her impressions on the admission process, the lectures and the professional outcomes after the Master at ENSAI. Now an associate Data Scientist at Expedia Group, she graduated in 2019.

Catriona chose ENSAI’s Master’s over any other program in Data Science in Europe, for its “strong theoretical basis, the project-based subjects and the final internship“. The first semester lectures are intense, says the Data Scientist, however all things learnt can be applied immediately in a professional environment thanks to the theoretical/practical balance of the program.

Both the alumna and head of the program emphasize on the “human-scale” size of the Master’s. Classes never exceed 12 students; because the application process is selective but also because close-knit teams allow students to succeed.

The Data Scientist explains that hard work pays. “One of the great things, when we were to find an internship was how much companies want to work with students who come out of ENSAI. There is this career fair where lots of professionals will come to pitch their companies. Your options are really wide!”

Mitchison concluded by inviting all students to apply to the program if they are interested and even get in touch with her, should they have any questions.
